Health officials in Taiwan have revised the number of patients who were infected with the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). As of August, Taiwan had reported 665 SARS cases that resulted in 180 deaths, according to the World Health Organization, but after retesting stored samples from patients who were diagnosed with the disease, officials lowered the numbers to 346 SARS cases resulting in just 37 deaths. Worldwide records were officially adjusted to allow for the new Taiwan numbers, so that the death toll from the SARS outbreak earlier this year is now 774, down from 916.
