AAFP News Now The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded approval of Merck's human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil, to include its use for preventing genital warts in boys and men nine to 26 years of age. In clinical trials involving more than 4,000 males, Gardasil was nearly 90 percent effective in preventing genital warts caused by infection with HPV types 6 and 11. The vaccine has already been approved for use in girls and young women ages nine to 26 years. Meanwhile, the FDA also recently approved GlaxoSmithKline's bivalent HPV vaccine, Cervarix, for girls and women ages 10 to 25 years.
